About the exhibition

Selections from the Kentler Flatfiles presented at the Brooklyn Academy of Music

Variations in Black and White
February 12 – March 2, 2007

Complementing Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Brooklyn Next programs is a BAMart exhibition showcasing the work of a dynamic Brooklyn gallery. Red Hook’s Kentler International Drawing Space was selected by artist/BAM Trustee Danny Simmons and artist Meridith McNeal, to present an exhibition curated by Director Florence Neal, entitled Selections from the Kentler Flatfiles: Variations in Black and White

The Kentler Flatfiles were started as part of the gallery’s inception in 1990. The Flatfiles, a compendium of artworks by over 150 artists, are an important resource for artists, collectors, curators and the general public by emphasizing the importance of drawing and work on paper in contemporary art today. The Kentler has a satellite Flatfile at Brooklyn’s new venue, Proteus Gowanus on Union Street, with a focus on artists’ prints.

Variations in Black and White, a selection of drawings and works on paper by sixteen artists, draws parallels between artists and musicians. The selected artists demonstrate variety and virtuosity within limitations of black to white, just as musicians and composers are able to constantly re-invent their art form within constraints of musical structure. Exhibited at the Brooklyn Adacemy of Music, Natman Room.
