About the event
PRINTING LIBERTY
Mokuhanga Demonstration
Monday, January 20, 10am – 2pm
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Florence Neal will hand-print works from her LIBERTY woodcut series in Kentler’s front gallery space. We invite the public to gather and observe the creation of new prints depicting the Statue of Liberty with text from the sonnet by Emma Lazarus featured on its base.
Since January 20, 2017, Florence has posted daily photographs of the Statue of Liberty taken from a rooftop in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This photo project inspired a series of mokuhanga prints, made using the traditional 17th century Japanese water-based woodcut technique. Each print is unique, reflecting the persistent icon’s ever-changing mood and surroundings.
In the spirit of hope and unity, we invite you to join Florence in her ongoing quest to celebrate Liberty in prints.
This event is FREE and family friendly.
